- Alege un model. Poate fi vorba de un vorbitor nativ sau doar de cineva a cărui pronunție o admiri. Trebuie însă ca persoana asupra căreia te-ai oprit să fie utilizator avansat al limbii țintă și să vorbească clar. Actorii sau prezentatorii TV sunt modelele perfecte pentru shadowing, au dicții exersate, pronunție clară și internetul abundă de materiale pe care le poți folosi;
- Selectează materialul: înregistrarea trebuie să conțină o singură voce și să fie relativ scurtă (maxim 5 minute). Audiobook-urile sunt materialele ideale pentru shadowing, deoarece oferă și textul scris. Dacă ești începător sau de nivel intermediar, caută audiobook-uri potrivite nivelului, unde ritmul și viteza sunt adaptate nevoilor celui ce ascultă. Poți încerca și Ted-Talks, monoloage, poeme, etc.;
- Ascultă înainte de a începe să faci shadowing. Obișnuiește-te cu accentul, intonația și ritmul vorbitorului. Scopul nu e înțelegerea fiecărui cuvânt, dar dacă textul e prea rapid sau vocabularul prea complex, e probabil bine să schimbi materialul;
- Începe să imiți: ascultă câteva secunde, apoi încearcă să reproduci cât mai fidel textul ascultat, respectând intonația, ritmul și viteza de redare ale vorbitorului din înregistrare. Repetă procesul până ești mulțumit de calitatea reproducerii;
- Înregistrează-te când te vei simți suficient de mulțumit de progresul făcut. Ascultă înregistrările și compară-le cu originalul. Urmărește-ți progresul și încearcă să nu fii foarte critic. Nu uita că foarte puținor oameni le place sunetul propriei voci!
Succes!
Shadowing – or how to improve your pronunciation in a foreign language using a very simple method
The dream of anyone who starts learning a foreign language is that, after a period of intensive study, they will be able to speak fluently and confidently in the target language. Paradoxically, traditional language courses tend to overlook exactly this aspect. Students spend precious hours filling in grammar gaps and memorizing vocabulary lists, often at the expense of speaking and pronunciation practice.
If you’re one of those learners who knows entire conjugation tables by heart and navigates dictionaries with ease, yet still finds actually speaking the language a real challenge, here’s a simple technique that can help you gain some of the natural flow and confidence of a native speaker.
The technique is called shadowing, and it allows you—quite literally—to become the shadow of a native speaker. What does this method involve? You can think of it as a fitness program for your speech apparatus, meaning the parts of the body responsible for producing sounds. In short, you listen to an audio recording and try to replicate, as accurately as possible, the way a native speaker talks. And while finding a native speaker might seem difficult, the truth is that the internet gives us access to an endless supply of such resources.
The recipe is simple:
-
Choose a model. This can be a native speaker or simply someone whose pronunciation you admire. What matters is that they are an advanced user of the target language and speak clearly. Actors or TV presenters are perfect for shadowing: they have trained diction, clear pronunciation, and the internet is full of materials you can use.
-
Select your material. The recording should feature only one voice and be relatively short (no more than 5 minutes). Audiobooks are ideal for shadowing because they also provide the written text. If you’re a beginner or intermediate learner, look for audiobooks suited to your level, with a pace and speed adapted to learners. You can also try TED Talks, monologues, poems, and similar content.
-
Listen before you start shadowing. Get used to the speaker’s accent, intonation, and rhythm. The goal isn’t to understand every single word, but if the text is too fast or the vocabulary too complex, it’s probably a good idea to choose different material.
-
Start imitating. Listen for a few seconds, then try to reproduce what you heard as faithfully as possible, following the speaker’s intonation, rhythm, and speed. Repeat the process until you’re satisfied with the quality of your imitation.
-
Record yourself once you feel happy with your progress. Listen to your recordings and compare them with the original. Track your progress and try not to be overly critical—don’t forget that very few people actually like the sound of their own voice!
Good luck!
